In 2002-2003, through the generosity of a Santa Cruz, Calif., philanthropist, CMS purchased and donated 8 Phaco Emulsification machines and 3 sterilization and distilled water plants to 9 public hospitals in Mumbai (Bombay), India. These machines enable physicians to perform state-of-the-art cataract operations on India's poor.

Tutoring Project: Rio de Janeiro

CMS ran the Rio de Janeiro Tutoring Project from 2004-2005. Conducted by Rio resident Nisa Ortiz, a long-time bilingual teacher of English and Portuguese, the Project provided private lessons to promising but financially needy Rio de Janeiro students. (One objective was to assist them in passing their university entrance exams.)
